Anchor: After the tragedy that happened in Bow School, here’s more on Nasar Ahmed’s death from Mahfuza…

Concerns have been raised by a group of students in Tower Hamlets about safety within schools.  Their concern follows the death of a teenaged boy at Bow School in the borough.

14 year-old Nasar Ahmed died from an asthma attack while in detention at the school.

Now, his peers, are asking whether there was enough done to prevent his death. We hear more in this report from Mahfuza.

Nasar was put in detention after  “intentionally” tripping over a bin as his teacher put it. CCTV footage shows Nasar pleading for forgiveness and to let him off detention.

The teacher didn’t think otherwise and kept Nasar in detention. Shortly, Nasar’s skin conditions became worse and he started suffering from an asthma attack. Nasar was taken to Royal London Hospital by ambulance where he spent four days in intensive care but passed away on Monday afternoon.

The question is, who is actually accountable of Mr. Ahmed’s death?

The CDC says that most school-associated deaths occur during transition times – before and after the school day and during lunch.

Could the boys who were fighting be blamed for Nasar’s death? If they didn’t fight, Nasar wouldn’t have gotten into detention, which led to his death, some say.

Was it the condition of the place the detention was held? What most people are blaming, is the teacher who put him in detention without a doubt.

Treatment plan

The main plan:

My original news story is based on the death of Nassar Ahmed, the boy who died because of his illness and being in detention. My aim was to explore what could be the reasons for his death, and how people are coping with the death of their loved one.

A backdrop on the story:

There was a fight between two boys within the school. Nassar Ahmed was walking by and accidentally tripped over a bin, knowing the bin down. The teacher who witnessed this put him in detention because he thought Nassar did this act intentionally. Despite the CCTV footage of Nassar crying and begging his teacher that he is sorry, the teacher went ahead with the detention that he gave him.  The detention was in the basement and apparently extended – my mission is to find out more details and the truth behind this story. A phone call went home to Nassar’s parents saying that the detention is over and his son has collapsed. His father went to the school straight away and sees him collapsed on the floor with many ambulances and doctors trying to carry him to the ambulance. Shortly after, Nassar was pronounced dead.

The reasons to his death could have been the teacher who put him in detention; he could have been showing racial dislike or Iislamophobia. It could have been the place that the detention was held – the basement. Was the basement’s conditions dirty/dusty/bad? Was Nassar being supervised and watched over? If so, who was it? & why didn’t they take immediate action when Nassar was breaking down? Was it due to his illness? What if he didn’t get a detention?

I was planning to interview a lawyer to get his/her viewpoint on the situation and if the school is held accountable.

Interviewing his friends and family will help to reach my aim of finding out how people cope with the loss of a loved one.

Contingency plan:

The impact of detentions – do they really work?

If I can’t manage to do the original story I was planning to do, then my back up story would be if detention really had an impact on people; education and students. My aim would be to answer the following questions:

Do detentions really have an impact on students?

Does it help them perform better at school and exams?

Does it increase the grades of a student?

Do teachers benefit from this some way or do they just want to go home too?

Do detentions shape the way students behave inside and outside the classrooms?

I would plan to interview the same lawyer I was planning to interview for my original story and ask him what his viewpoint is.

I would interview some teachers and also some students to see their opinions and viewpoints.

Update on Production Group Logo

Originally, our production group was called 'Flash News'. However, due to the content that we are planning to include in our radio newscast, we decided to change the name to suit our target audience's preference, and to match with our style of radio news broadcasting.
After some primary research from a few members of our target audience, we found that they preferred the name 'Flash FM' rather than 'Flash News', as 'Flash News' had seemed to be too formal for our target audience.

The location of my story (my own planning)

As mentioned before, my part of the newscast is based on the death of a school boy his illness and the conditions of his school. I will be focusing on the safeguarding of the school, how the staff treat their students and the impact of death amongst loved ones.
What I could possibly include n my story:
The location of where it happened: The tragedy happened in Bow in East London. On the same week of the 14th of November (Nassar Ahmed's date of death), another 2 incidents have happened on the same road. This could possibly indicate that the area / road is a dangerous place. An undercover police officer had been stabbed (https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2244587/london-bow-road-stabbing-arrest-police-officer-injured/ ) and a 10 year old boy had passed away after being the victim of a hit and run (http://metro.co.uk/2016/11/25/hit-and-run-leaves-boy-10-with-life-changing-injuries-6282558/).
When planning my script, I can include both these stories at the beginning of my section of the newscast. For example, "in between the death of a police officer and a 10 year old boy, a 14 yeard old boy - Nassar Ahmed has died from being in detention with serious health conditions".
In my opinion, Muslims often are stereotypically represented as terrorists or are portrayed negatively in the media. The media does not reminiscence upon the good things about Muslims. Muslims are neglected and not cared upon and I believe that the death of Nassar Ahmed must be heard, and justice must be prevailed.
Nassar was an innocent Muslim boy, as so all other newscasts and websites have said. He accidentally tripped over a dustbin and was put in detention for this - no reason at all.
This could be the case of racism / Islamophobia from the teacher who did not change his decision for putting Nassar in detention, even after Nassar had begged him to - or this could have been a misunderstanding. My aim is to investigate this issue and receive opinions on this issue from various people, using methods such as Vox Pops.

Noshin and I went out and asked some members of our target audience the basic and main questions that needed to be answered in order to make our perfect radio newscast. Our first question to our target audience was "which radio station do you listen to the most?" Many had said Capital FM and BBC radio 1. This certifies that BBC radio 1 and Capital FM are our main radio stations that we are competing with. It also allows us to contemplate on how we would make our radio newscast more successful and fitting for our audience. The fact that a couple of people said they don't listen to the radio was expected from within our age range of our target audience, because nowadays teens are more engaged in social media such as Snapchat and Instagram. This links onto my next post, where a member of Flash FM (Tasnim)asks which social media platforms will be useful for us to promote our radio newscast. Some of these people, predominantly, find radio news "boring" as one of our target audience has stated. However they did say we should talk about a variety of topics to make it newsworthy and entertaining at the same time. Overall, a majority of people said they would listen to news about crime in the local area, so this will be our focus point in order to make our radio newscast successful.
